Museums in Moscow for History

In this post, we go through a Moscow museum guide for the history lovers who want to dive into the history of Russia and the Soviet Union. There is also a museum if you are curious about Jewish history in Russia and about vodka. In total, seven museums are listed with each of their names written in Cyrillic in case if you need to write them. Remember that prices may be outdated.


Museum of Cosmonautics (Музей Космонавтики)

Museum of Cosmonautics is the only space museum in Moscow, where relics and spacecraft developed during the Soviet Union are exhibited. The museum’s website gives all the information about tours in English. The entry fee is 250 rubles.

Opening hours:

Monday – closed

10 a.m. – 7 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays

10 a.m. – 9 p.m. on Thursdays and Saturdays

Located at Prospekt Mira, 111 – near the metro station VDNKh (ВДНХ).

Historical Park “Russia, My History” (Исторический Парк “Россия Моя История”)

At Historical Park, there are exhibitions about several periods of Russian history, including the Soviet times. Ongoing exhibitions can be consulted on the website, in Russian. For all visitors, there is a simple ticket that costs 500 rubles – the English audio guide costs 200 rubles per person. For tours in English, contact in advance on the email info@expohistory.ru.You can do excursions for 6.000 rubles per group (from 1 to 5 persons). And for groups from 10 to 25 persons, it costs 700 rubles per person.

Located at Prospekt Mira, 119 – near the metro station VDNKh (ВДНХ).

Bunker 42 (Бункер 42)

Known as Stalin’s bunker, Bunker 42 is located 65 m under the ground. It used to be the Red Army’s central command from 1941 to 1945. Tours at Bunker 42 about Cold War and Soviet Period are available on the website bunker42.com.

Located at 5-y Kotelnicheskiy Per., 11 – next to the metro station Taganskaya (Таганская).

Gulag History Museum (Музей истории Гулага)

Founded in 2001, the Gulag History Museum comprises archives, memoirs, letters, artworks, and personal belongings of former GULAG prisoners.

Opening hours:

Monday – closed

12 a.m. – 9 p.m. Thursday

11 a.m. – 7 p.m. other weekdays

*Last Friday of each month is cleaning day

Located at 1st Samotechny Pereulok, 9, bld 1 – near the metro stations Dostoyevskaya (Достоевская) and Novoslobodskaya (Новослободская). The entrance fee is 300 rubles, 150 for students.

Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center (Еврейский музей)

Opened in 2012, the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center exposes the life of Jewish people in Russia from the period of Catherine II until nowadays. The museum hosts exhibition of modern art, excursions, and a library.

Opening hours:

12 a.m. – 10 p.m. from Sunday to Thursday

10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Friday

*Closed on Saturdays and Jewish holidays

Located at Obraztsova, 11, build 1A – near the metro stations Dostoyevskaya (Достоевская), Novoslobodskaya (Новослободская), and Marina Roscha (Марьина Роща). The entrance fee is usually 400 rubles (reduced 200 rubles).

Museum of the History of Vodka (музей Истории Водки)

The Museum of the History of Vodka gives the chance to see the process of distillation from the 18th century, collections of vodka bottles, and historical notes about this product present in every stereotype about Russia. Tasting sessions must be booked in advance, contact details on the website vodkamuseum.ru.

Open every day from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Located at Izmaylovskoe Shosee, 73 G – near the metro stations Izmaylovo (Измайлово) and Lokomotiv (Локомотив). Entry fee on 200 rubles.

Darwin Museum (Государственный Дарвиновский Музей)

Darwin Museum is a large museum of natural science along 3 buildings with exhibitions illustrating the evolution process, seminars, and educational activities.

Opening hours:

Monday – closed

10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday

*Closed on last Friday of every month and on January 1st.

Located at Vavilova St, 57 – near the metro station Universitet (Университет). The entrance fee is 400 rubles, they vary according to the activity you book for.
