As Cape Town is a cosmopolitan city, you can find restaurants there serving cuisines from all corners of the world, from Zimbabwean food to Kurdish food. In this post, I’m going to share a list of restaurants, bars, and a cafe among the ones I used to visit during my stay, whether for tourism, work, or international exchange and get to know a little of the different sides that the city has.
Restaurants in Cape Town
Marco’s Place
Known locally as Marco’s Place, Marco’s African Place is a restaurant in the Bo-kaap neighborhood known for cuisine from South African tribes such as the Xhosa, crocodile tail, springbok, impala, oysters, African Beer, in addition to South African wines. At night, there is usually live music. Although it is a tourist place, it has reasonable prices and quality service.

San Julián
Located near Marco’s Place, San Julián is a genuine Mexican restaurant founded by the Garcia family who has been working in the business for 3 generations and has been in Cape Town for some years. There you can try tacos, tortillas, quesadillas, empanadas, assorted desserts, and, of course, tequila, as well as other drinks Mexican.

Jimmy Jimalo Bar & Grill
Simply known as Jimmy Jimalo, this restaurant on Long Street is known for serving tasty Zimbabwean food at affordable prices, grilled meat, and other dishes that remember the taste of some South American cuisines, including even rice and beans. It’s one of my favorite restaurants in Cape Town for the quality of the food and the price. At night, it also serves as a meeting place to watch football/soccer matches and sporting events on TV.
Address: 206, Long Street.
Usually open from 8:00h until 23:00h.
Biltong: a delicacy to taste in South Africa
Whether in Cape Town or wherever you are in South Africa, you cannot miss the opportunity to taste the biltong, which is dry-cured meat that is often consumed as an aperitif. Biltong is often sliced, marinated, cured in vinegar, and then air-dried until cut into strips. It can be made with beef, fish, chicken, and even game meats like springbok. I love to eat biltong with wine and I used to buy it in markets and kiosks that slice it by weight.

Once in Cape Town, it is also worth trying the locally produced gin and one of the bars worth visiting is The Gin Bar, which started in 2014 and today serves more than 100 gin-based drinks, 80 of which are manufactured in South Africa. There are also served sparkling wines produced locally, known as Cap Classique. For anyone interested in learning more about gin, consider this guided gin-making tour.

I hope these tips help you to enjoy the city of Cape Town and to get to know a little about the many faces that this incredible city has. If you are interested in visiting wineries in the region, certainly include in your itinerary at least a 1-day visit to a winery in the neighboring towns of Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek.
