If you wonder when is the best time to visit Florianopolis, the answer depends on what you want to do there and what kind of weather you are looking for. The climate in Southern Brazil is not exactly tropical, subtropical to be precise, let a year-round summer. It’s the only region in Brazil with four seasons a year.
So before getting into details, we brief the four seasons along the year to help you plan your stay in Florianopolis and decide what month is better for you.
From December to March

The beaches are crowded, especially during the weekends, until the carnival. After the carnival, beaches are frequented mostly by locals and residents. The period between Christmas and New Year is usually the most expensive per night for renting a place in coastal cities.
From April to Mid-June
From April to mid-June, it’s autumn in southern Brazil when temperatures remain up to 30ºC (86ºF), so as in Florianopolis. Nothing compares to autumn in the northern hemisphere. Until April, it’s possible to go to the beaches and the weather is warm most days. From mid-May to June, it’s when temperatures start to decrease, hitting even below +20ºC (68ºF).
From Mid-June to Mid-September
Officially, from mid-June to mid-September is the wintertime in southern Brazil. Not exactly like the winter in the northern hemisphere, it’s similar to the winter in Argentina, Portugal, Spain, and Italy. Sometimes the temperatures go under 0ºC (32ºF), around -2ºC (28.40ºF) on the coldest days. However, bear in mind that local houses and buildings aren’t equipped with a heater, so you’ll need to dress warm clothes indoors. Beaches in Florianopolis get empty at this time of the year, except for surfers and photographers. At this time, the hills are more popular among travelers expecting to see some snow and experience a cold day, as Serra do Rio do Rastro in the state of Santa Catarina, which is known for its fascinating road trip.
From Mid-September to Mid-December
From mid-September starts springtime that goes until mid-December. The weather in Florianopolis is warm but rainy during September and October. However, there are some cold days until October. By November, the temperatures become warmer like summer and the beaches start to get crowded.
Summer in Florianopolis
Summer in Florianopolis means traffic jams, crowded beaches, so as packed bars and restaurants. The city is an island inhabited by about 440,000 inhabitants and in summers, up to 1 million may visit the city. In some areas, there are power cuts and water supply stops when demand hits above local capacity.
