Museums in Moscow for Art Lovers

A basic Moscow museum guide for travelers who want to get in touch with Russian art, fine arts, and Christian art. In this post, we share information about the following museums: Tretyakov Gallery, Museum of Russian Icons, Pushkin Museum, State Historical Museum, Moscow Museum of Modern Art, State Museum of Oriental Art, and Garage Museum Art. Tretyakov Gallery (Третьяковская Галерея)

Tretyakov Gallery is a mandatory place if you want to know the Russian art (from the 11th to 20th century) and national artistic heritage. Information about exhibitions is available in English on Tretyakov Gallery’s website.

Opening hours:

10 a.m. – 6 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Sundays

10 a.m. – 9 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays

Located at Lavrushenskiy Pereulok, 10 – near the metro station Tretyakovskaya (Третьяковская). The entrance fee is 500 rubles for adults, free for children.

There is also the New Tretyakov (Новая Третьяковка), that focuses on the art of the 20th century and trends of the 21st century. It’s located at Krymsky Val, 10 – near the metro stations Park Kulturiy (парк культуры) and Oktyabrskaya (Октябрьская). The entrance fee is 500 for adults, free for children.

Museum of Russian Icons (Музей Русской Иконы)

The Museum of Russian Icons is a private collection of Orthodox Christian art. It includes collections of Byzantine Art (6th to 14th centuries), Eastern Church art, Early Christian art from the Roman empire, Ethiopian Christian culture, and Greek art (15th to 18th centuries). Located at Goncharnaya Street, 3c1 (Гончарная Ул., 3c1), next to metro stations Taganskaya (Таганская) and Marksistskaya (марксистская). The entrance is free.

Pushkin Museum (пушкинский музеи)

Located next to Christ the Savior Cathedral and to the Red Square, the Pushkin Museum holds a large collection of fine arts from different epochs: from Ancient Egypt and Greece artworks to Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings.

Opening hours:

11 a.m.- 8 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday

11 a.m. – 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday

Monday – closed

Located at 12 Volkhonka, near the metro station Kropotinskaya (Кропоткинская). The entrance fee is 300 rubles (150 reduced), but it varies if buying combined tickets for different collections.

State Historical Museum (Государственный исторический музей)

The State Historical Museum covers Russian history and the history of Eurasia civilization along 40 rooms. The collections involve sculptures, drawings, paintings, music, literature, decoration, religion, theater, and architecture.

Opening hours:

10 a.m. – 6 p.m. from Monday to Sunday

Located at the Red Square – next to metro stations Okhotny Ryad (Охотный ряд), Ploschad Revolyutsii (Площадь Революции), and Teatralnaya (Театральная). The entry fee costs 300 rubles (150 rubles for students and pensioners).

Moscow Museum of Modern Art (Московский Музей Современного Искусства)

This museum focuses on the art of the 20th and 21st centuries, on modern and contemporary Russian art, as well as international artists. It has 5 venues around Moscow center city, the main building is at Petrovka Street. Trubnaya (Трубная) is the closest metro station. Tours must be booked in advance (see details). The standard admission fee is 500 rubles but varies according to what activities provided by the museum.

Opening hours:

12 a.m. – 8 p.m. from Monday to Sunday

1 p.m. – 9 p.m. on Thursdays

State Museum of Oriental Art (Государственный Музей Востока)

A museum for preservation, display, and research of Oriental Art. Collections include artwork from Asia and Africa, too.

Opening hours:

Monday – closed

11 a.m. – 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays

12 a.m. – 9 p.m. on Wednesdays and Thursdays

Located at 12a Nikitskiy Boulevard – next to the metro stations Arbatskaya (Арбатская) and Pushkinskaya (Пушкинская). The entrance fee is 300 rubles.

Garage Museum of Contemporary Art

Founded by Dasha Zhukova and Roman Abramovich, Garage hosts exhibitions regarded to Russian art from the 1950s to nowadays. For tours, see details on the website. The museum is also accessible to people with disabilities.

Opening hours:

Daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Located at Gorky Park, near the metro stations Oktyabrskaya (Октябрьская) and Park Kultury (парк культуры). The entrance fee is 500 rubles (250 for students).
